The first two weeks of school flew by and we are now beginning the third week. We wanted to review some important information with parents and caregivers.

Westvale is part of the WRDSB Safe Arrival Program. We make phone calls to families if a child has not arrived at school. Please ensure that if your child is going to be late or absent you leave a message stating your child’s name, their teacher’s name, the reason for the late or absence and which day(s) they will be away. Please leave an email message at wsv-attendance@wrdsb.ca or you can call 519-746-6724 and press 1 for the attendance line to leave a message. If your child is entering school after 9:00 am, please make sure you sign them in at the front office.

Last Thursday and Friday, Student Emergency Information forms  (in paper format) were sent home with the students.  Thank you to the families who have already returned the completed forms. Please send the information back with your child as soon as possible to ensure our emergency records are updated. Please also take time to review the information on the attached letter. If you have any questions, please contact the school.

Nutrition for Learning started today at Westvale. Nutritious snacks are available to students if they remain hungry after eating their lunches brought from home. Nutrition for Learning snacks cover the four food groups and include items such as: fruit, vegetables, cheese, yogurt, melba toast and granola bars. The snack items vary every week and are accessible in each student’s classroom.

The School Council would like to offer a big thank you to our amazing parent volunteers who generously offered their time to nourish our school garden this summer! Despite busy summer schedules and the lasting effects of COVID, they have done a tremendous job cultivating beauty from bare soil, with vegetables now available for our students and teachers to use. Thank you Heather Townsend, Nadine Collins, Myrna Maranan, and Tamara Donnelly.

Thank you to all the families who attended our “Meet the Educators” event last Wednesday. There were so many excited students and families. We appreciate the support of the school council who organized the food trucks. The school council meeting also had a great turnout last Wednesday. The next council meeting will be on Wednesday, October 5.

Today, Westvale commemorated the passing of Queen Elizabeth II with an explanatory student announcement and a minute of silence at 1 pm.

This Thursday, September 22, the school will participate in our Terry Fox Run. Our rain date is Monday, September 26.  Our goal is to raise $2.00 for every student who attends our school and to raise awareness of Cancer Research.  Donations can be made online at https://schools.terryfox.ca/WestvalePSWaterloo or sent in to the school with your child  on September 22.

On Friday, September 30 Westvale will take part in the “National Day for Truth and Reconciliation”. We encourage students to wear Orange Shirts on September 30 as we learn to honour the legacy of the Canadian Indian residential school system.

Thank you for supporting your child’s learning journey at Westvale.
