The first six weeks of school have gone by quickly. This is an update and information for the whole school.

Photo Proofs

Your child is bringing home photo proofs from our Photo Day. Orders are due October 22 with Pegasus Photos and all information about ordering is found on the proof.

There will be a retake day later in the fall for students who were absent on Photo Day and for those unhappy with their first photo.

Arrival

We thank families for ensuring that students are attending school consistently and arriving promptly. It is important for your child’s learning and development at all grade levels. We begin the learning at 9 am and finish at 3:20 pm.

PD Day

Please remember that this Friday, October 11 is a PD Day and there is no school for students. Information was sent last week about what educators are focusing on during their professional learning on the Professional Development Day.

Pizza Days

We have held off starting Pizza Days until the school reorganization is complete and our Student Information System is accurate for the online ordering. Information will be coming out soon for the online ordering to start Pizza Days near the end of October. Thank you for your patience.

Strong Start

We are continuing to look for volunteers to assist with the Strong Start program at Westvale. It is a program to help students in Senior Kindergarten and Grade 1 to learn to read.

Volunteers work one-on-one with a child in our school, playing carefully designed games and activities. You would sign up for a Part 1 and Part 2 training session. Find out more on the Strong Start website.  Martha Braun is the  Strong Start Site Coordinator for Westvale Public School.  She can be reached at martha.braun@gmail.com if you would like to volunteer. We thank you in advance for supporting our early readers.

Special Online Event for Parents

Westvale Public School is pleased to announce that next Thursday, October 17 we are partnering with Dr. Alison Yeung for Smartphones, Social Media & the Mental Health Epidemic. Dr. Yeung will present virtually to parents using a Google Meet at 6:30 pm for an hour.

Please go to School-day and  click https://www.school-day.com/pg/file/view/2991097 to view the full flyer with details for the online parent presentation.

The Google Meet link is also shared via the School-day message.

Entry into the session will begin at 6:25 pm so the presentation can begin at 6:30 pm.

Upcoming student events

Keep the following on your child’s schedule:

October 18 – Fall Play Day – Students will be participating in active outdoor activities as part of Take Me Outdoors week. Students will move through the interactive stations and participate with their class and teachers.

October 31 –  Black and Orange Day –  On Thursday, October 31, students may choose to wear orange and black, their favourite outfit or wear their Halloween costume to school. If your child chooses to wear a costume, please avoid masks, make-up, props or any costume that represents someone else’s culture or religion. October 31 will be a normal school day and there will be no distribution of candy or food from or to students or staff. Children should be able to manage the costume they are wearing for the day. Please keep it simple.
